A group of us, Mister MB Photos, Mitchster, Just Roaming the Cities, Snapshutter, and Beat of an Eye, and I spent a Thursday evening wandering around the north side of the Mississippi River. Eyephoto met us, but he had prior commitments at the State Theater.
I am amazed at the attention that we drew as we wandered around with our cameras and tripods. There were many inquisitive people asking about our group and had a nice conversation with a gentleman near the pavilion on Nicollet Island.
Further into the evening, the best quaetion asked of me was, "are you taking pictures?"
(Naw, I just enjoy lugging my camera and tripod around for the fun of it.)
Note the star effect on the street lights on the lower image. This happens when using a more narrow aperture, f11 and up. Here I used an f-stop of f16 for deeper depth of field and more vivid color rendering. The number of points to the star is determined by the number of elements that make up the aperture opening in the lens.

Those are great shots, the colour is almost surreal. I think this is a case where digital beats film. It would be hard to avoid colour casts on film with the tungsten lighting etc. Did you have to play with white balance, or was that auto. Another 'nerdy' question, what's the camera used on these?
ReplyDeleteThese are super-stunning photos! The colors are so awesome they just look to me like a purple gradient paint has been spilled over the structure! Nicely shot! Perfect lights!
ReplyDeleteEven I'd like to know the camera used!

Awesome shots!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Dusty Lens! Beautiful blue.
ReplyDeleteThe second picture is awesome...
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the exposure details, it gives us clear idea of what is going on.
Nice shots! I am still amazed at the effects of LED lighting! I like how the lights create that star look to them
ReplyDeleteOh wow these are gorgeous. I was wondering about the stars! Thanks for the info btw.
ReplyDeleteI've been watching Mitchster's great shots of this bridge. You've done it justice too. I wonder if any other cities are going to follow suit. This bridge is amazing at night.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDeleteMy digital camera is the Canon Rebel XTi with 17-85mm f4-f5.6 Image Stabilized lens. My old film camera is a Canon AE1 Program.
I left the white balance on AUTO. the lighting on the bridge is LED, (I believe by Colorkinetics, but I'm not sure. I used to spec them when I was working). LED is more difficult to get the white balance correct, especially at night where mid gray is all but impossible to detect. I tweaked the colors in Photoshop Elements to make them more accurate.
Oh that's just great, we have the same camera and look what you get! I still don't get how you use a 100 ISO and get a damn thing. THe whole lot of you had better thank your lucky stars that I didn't tag along on your shoot cause I can ask some dumber questions than, "Are you taking pictures?". I have about 10 I'd like to ask right now. I might email them.:)

PS Fantabulous shots DL
wow , that's wonedrful , i am totally amazed !
ReplyDeleteAwesome. As the top one filled in on my screen it looked like some sort of glowing transformer or something.
ReplyDeleteI love the lit up colour of the bridge. Thanks for the lesson too!
ReplyDeleteThe first one looked like something out of the film "Star Wars". Really cool. I have never seen this bridge at night yet. Looks like it is worth the trip.
ReplyDeletekakeroo
really spectacular work! you made me want to go out at night and find a bridge to photograph :)
ReplyDeleteOh how fabulous - the photos of course - and that you got together with other great photographers. Superb. The colours and clarity are simply amazing.
ReplyDeleteHoly Space Age Batman! (at least that first shot). Very cool.
ReplyDeleteI love the top one - getting close to being abstract, which I like a lot.
ReplyDeleteGotta get my nit-pick in - could do with being absolutely, geometrically straight and centred (left to right) ...near pixel-perfect.
With those cold, clinical, crisp blues it's crying out for it. All imho, of course!!
